Solution Profile |
|
| |
DataONTAP's WAFL (The Write Anywhere File Layout system) manages data via files. Files are easier to manage, easier to backup and easier to restore. Two tools of DataONTAP, SnapShot and SnapRestore can easily backup and restore 1TB or larger databases in seconds. By using these tolls for backup and restore tremendous productivity gains are obtained since databases can be backed up and restored in seconds and this time is independent of database size. The first tool is SnapShot, a read-only, consistent image of a filers file system, frozen at some past point in time. A Snapshot can be scheduled automatically or can be executed by manual commands. Up to 31 SnapShots can be maintained concurrently with no additional disk space when first taken. SnapShots only start to consume space as the file system changes and usually amounts to only a 20% space overhead. Snapshots replace a large portion of the functionality that traditional backups are normally relied upon for accidental data corruption and accidental data deletion, or data recovery in general. The second tool, SnapRestore, allows a volume to completely revert back to any specified Snapshot. This allows a business to recover from a database or application corruption problem in a fraction of the time required to recover from a tape or disk backup. A 300GB Oracle database requiring complete recovery would take only 3 minutes + replay log time! Additional features that complement an Oracle environment are the online expansion of disk volumes that can be recognized instantly by both DataONTAP and the database without any downtime. In addition WAFL constantly checks the file system to make sure it is consistent. It does not, and can not repair all damage. Although it cannot detect or repair corruption to user data, self-consistency promotes data integrity and minimizes the damage done by corruption and inconsistencies. |
